Scott asked Julie the million-dollar question: “What if, instead of using solar panels on residential rooftops, we make roads out of solar panels?” That was the question. We had no idea at the time that it would lead to a business idea. But Scott thought that if we put solar panels in some type of plastic overlay and encased them in an aggregate, it would hold up better than asphalt.

Solar Roadways: About & Story

Scott and Julie Brusaw grew up in rural Idaho, where together they spent their childhoods enjoying the outdoors. In 2006 while driving across America, Scott came up with the idea of replacing all of the country’s roads and highways with solar panels. Seeing an opportunity to make a difference in the world, the Brusaws launched a project that would be known as Solar Roadways®.

Solar Roadways’ mission is to replace all existing roadways with solar panels that generate electricity, produce fresh potable water and provide a comfortable walking/biking surface. This will create a massive network of energy.

A cost-saving alternative to traditional roadway construction: a new structural pavement system that generates Renewable Energy. Daniel Friedman and another partner at the company have developed a structural system that will last indefinitely without concrete.

Solar Roadways were awarded a 2-year $750,000 Phase II SBIR contract by the USDOT in July of 2011. This funding allowed them to conduct more research and build the world’s first prototype solar parking lot.

A solar PV + smart parking system turns an existing asphalt surface into a dynamic, multi-functional, smart parking surface for electric vehicles.
