Unbound Solar: FAQS
What is the difference between grid-tied and off-grid solar?
Grid-tie systems connect to the public utility grid, which stores energy produced by your panels for later use. This means you don’t need to buy batteries for storage, which saves a ton of money.
If you value self-sufficiency, like the idea of generating your own power, and don’t want to rely on electricity being supplied by a utility, then an off-grid system may be right for you.
There’s a third system type: Grid-tied with energy storage systems are essential when considering the grid-tied system. These alternative forms of power provide continuous clean energy to secure data centers, manufacturing plants, and heavy industrial applications.
How do I get a permit for my system?
Contact your AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) for permitting information and to inspect the system before it is energized. This is typically your local city or county planning office. You will also need to contact your utility provider to sign an interconnection agreement if applicable.
How much does it cost to go solar?
Following is a list of average solar system costs based on how you approach your installation. It is based on the national average energy usage of 914 kWh per month, as of January 2020
- Self-installed: $1.10-$1.60 per watt / ~$9,500 average system cost
- Hire local installer: $1.85-$2.60 per watt / ~$15,352 average system cost
- National installer: $2.50-$3 per watt / ~$18,975 average system cost
The most accurate way to get an estimate is to use Unbound Solar’s calculator.
What’s the difference between string inverters, micro-inverters, and power optimizers?
Inverters are the bridge between your solar panels and your home. They convert the power generated by your panels into a format that can be used by your appliances.
A string inverter allows you to wire multiple solar panels together into one device. Doing so can bring a great deal of efficiency to your system because a single unit can take care of the full amount of power produced. Multiple strings are required if you have shading issues in certain locations or if your installation isn’t perfect.
Micro-inverters are small units attached to every panel that converts the energy from the sun into DC current. Each micro-inverter controls the output of a single panel. If one panel’s production drops (due to malfunction or shade, for example), the rest of the panels are not affected.
String inverters pair the benefits of micro-inverters with power optimizers, combining efficiency and cost-effectiveness for a better solar installation.
